Bear Tries to Break into my NM Yurt at Midnight – Talk About Brazen! |
Two nights ago, a bear tried to walk into my yurt – my home. I made a pet screening panel that fits over the opening for the front French doors. It has been fine for over 10 years. I heard a commotion, stuff being knocked off a shelf and the curtain bobbing around. I figured a cat fight was in progress. I rushed over, but no cats. I pulled the curtain away from the screen, and something pushed the screen in maybe 5 inches. I bopped the big bump that was in the middle of the screen with my flashlight- several times. It was too dark to see what was on the other side. Then, I decided to pull the curtain completely across. That ended things. Huh, I thought. I stayed up for another hour, then went to bed. The next morning, I went to check for footprints. No canine ones. No raccoon. But for the first time in two years, I saw fresh and crisp bear prints. They did not continue on the driveway to the front of the clearing. So, I figure the bear remembered the blindingly bright motion sensor lights positioned there and walked up the hill a bit to the back of the yurt, then came around to the front. Subsequently, I added 3 layers of shade cloth and put one of my motion sensor lights in front of the door. Seems to have worked. My neighbor told me a bold bear has been disturbing other people around here. I am buying more motion sensor lights. In the two years I’ve had them. I have not seen any coyote prints or bear prints until this most recent situation. |
